Learning Curve tells the story of two Silicon Valley executives, one a veteran CEO of an established corporation, the other a young founder of a hot new startup, as they battle for industry dominance—all while dealing with both external threats and the manipulations of people close to them. Nothing is as it seems in this high-stakes game of cat and mouse.

Author Michael S. Malone has enjoyed a fabled Silicon Valley career. He grew up in Mt. View and Sunnyvale, where his schoolmates and neighbors included Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak. David Packard wrote his grad school recommendation letter. He joined the San Jose Mercury-News as the world’s first daily high tech reporter, covered the rise of Apple Computer and the personal computer industry, as was twice nominated by the paper for the Pulitzer Prize for his groundbreaking investigations into toxic chemical leaks and espionage in the Valley.

Malone then became one of the very first technology freelancers, syndicating his reporting electronically to the New York Times (where he became a columnist), the Boston Globe, and The Economist (for whom he covered the Macintosh introduction), among other publications. In subsequent years, as a contributing editor, Malone helped with the creation of Upside, Fast Company, and Forbes ASAP (he was editor of the last during its National Magazine Award-nominated, dot.com era). He was a columnist for ABCNews for nearly a decade and currently is a regular contributor of editorials for the Wall Street Journal.

Malone says that he has put all of these experiences into Learning Curve. “I got tired of writers parachuting into Silicon Valley and thinking they could capture the spirit of the place by only hanging out in San Francisco with the social networking kids or in Palo Alto with the Facebook crowd. They are important, but they are only a small fraction of the story. I wanted to show the real world of tech—complete with an ending as unpredictable, and yet as inevitable, as real-life Valley competition. I think when Silicon Valley-ites read this novel, they will recognize all of the characters, including themselves. Readers elsewhere will appreciate that these characters actually think, act and talk like the famous figures they read about.”
